  • The greater Narragansett Bay is one of the most well-studied estuaries on earth and boasts an economy estimated to exceed $10 billion annually from tourism and fisheries. This activity will provide an opportunity to explore the continuing development of Aquaculture in RI through a visit to Roger Williams University, which is known for its shellfish and ornamental fish aquaculture programs. You’ll have a chance to explore RWU facilities, and observe several local farms aboard the R/V InVinceble Spirit. Afterwards, enjoy a buffet dinner featuring RWUs very own Ferry Cliff Oysters on the lawn overlooking the Mt. Hope Bay. Transportation to/from the Graduate is included.

NOTE: click "not attending" for the breakfast and lunch events if you have already included this with your meeting registration.
  • Rhode Island is the Ocean State and what better way to see it than by visiting one of its ocean front state parks, where you can explore its inter- and subtidal regions for phycological bounty. After collecting, we will return to the Department of Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Science at Roger Williams University where you can examine, document and preserve specimens in RWUs marine biology teaching labs. Microscopes will be available and materials will be provided to prepare herbarium vouchers, semi-permanent slides and silica gel preservation. Transportation to/from the Graduate and lunch are included. Secure your spot today! NOTE: click "not attending" for the breakfast and lunch events if you have already included this with your meeting registration.
  • The goal of the Inclusive Teaching in Phycology Workshop is to raise collective awareness for the ways that Phycology Instructors could reach a broader audience by identifying, addressing and discussing strategies that discourage participation by some students, particularly in the field and laboratory settings, and by brainstorming innovations to address those shortcomings. A selection of examples will be presented by people experienced in teaching phycology courses, with time for participants to discuss and get feedback on their own teaching experiences. NOTE: click "not attending" for the breakfast and lunch events if you have already included this with your meeting registration.
  • This workshop will provide attendees with a familiarity with the non-proprietary image software Fiji, as well as a primer on figure preparation for the Journal of Phycology. The workshop will include:
    • An introduction to the basics of Fiji
    • A showcase to overview the potential uses, both introductory and advanced, of Fiji for image editing and analysis
    • Tutorials for introductory uses of Fiji
    • General overview on figure formatting and prioritization of formats for publication
    • Information on the requirements for figures for publication in Journal of Phycology
This workshop is open to all conference attendees, from students to experienced professionals. Please bring a laptop for using Fiji as well as any images you would like to use in the workshop; template figures will also be provided to use during the tutorials. There will be AV equipment and power sockets (US plug size only) available in the room. NOTE: click "not attending" for the breakfast and lunch events if you have already included this with your meeting registration.

Scientific Program

The theme of this year’s meeting is Phycology in a Changing Climate: Diversity, Blooms, and Beyond. The program will consist of daily plenary talks from leading scientists in the field of algal monitoring and conservation. We will also have the Bold Award Competition, IDEA Symposium, Student Symposium, Lang Lecture, poster sessions (including the Lewin Award Competition), lightning talks, contributed sessions, and the engaging annual PSA auction. We will conclude the meeting on Thursday evening with the PSA Awards Banquet in the Biltmore Ballroom.

This year, we are sponsoring an Early Career Breakfast, IDEA Lunch and Discussion, and tantalizing your tastebuds for the PSA Business Meeting. Please be sure to check "attending" during registration so that we may get an accurate headcount for these events.

Also, there are several exciting weekend workshops on seaweed collection and identification, producing publication-quality scientific figures, inclusivity in teaching, as well as an aquaculture tour and oyster social at Roger Williams University.

Please note you must purchase tickets for workshops and weekend events separately from registration. NOTE: click "not attending" for the breakfast and lunch events if you have already included this with your meeting registration.

Abstract Submission

Please follow the abstract preparation guidelines (see psaalgae.org). These guidelines and procedures must be followed exactly, or your abstract will not be accepted.  The deadline for abstracts is 23:59 Eastern Daylight Time on April 30, 2023.

*VERY IMPORTANT* Be prepared to submit your properly formatted abstract at the time of meeting registration. You will be unable to go back to make changes.

Selection of session topics is designed to facilitate assignment of your abstract to members of the Scientific Program Committee for review. Please note that meeting sessions may not match exactly this list of topics; we will make every attempt to group your presentation with those of similar topic. Priority is given to the overall scientific program and, therefore, final placement is solely at the discretion of the organizing committee.
